Cemetery Condition

Monuments in Maple Grove CemeteryAlthough the most recent burial at Maple Grove Cemetery was in 2001, the appearance indicates that the cemetery received only an occaisional mowing. On my visit the grass and weeds were somewhat high, but not in a complete vegetative state. There is evidence that this cemetery once received great care, as many of the oldest stones were broken and repaired a long time ago. The cemetery does not appear to have suffered vandalism. Many of the lanterns that were part of the stone from the late 1800s are intact or have been repaired, while others are on the ground with the stone. Many of the older burials had footstones that have been pulled up and are laying with the monuments.

About the Cemetery

This cemetery is located in rural Linn County in the Boicourt area. The cemetery appears to have been established in the mid-1800s. The oldest legible stone is Elizabeth Hurley, who passes in 1861, and the most recent stone is for Fern Middaugh, interred in 2001. Based on the dates of the legible stones, the peak time of usage for this cemetery was 1861 - 1893, with 1874 having the most burials. A second, smaller peak occurred in the 1920s and a final peak in the 1960s. There was one burial in the 1980s, and the last burial came in 2001.
